Science and Exploration in the Pacific
European Voyages to the Southern Oceans in the 18th Century
Edited by Margarette Lincoln
Deriving from an initiative of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich
and the Royal Society, these are studies of scientific and cultural
discoveries made on Cook's 1768 voyage to the South Seas in
"Endeavour", and of issues arising from this and subsequent
Pacific voyages by European explorers.
The exploration of the Pacific in the eighteenth century by western
Europeans has an enduring fascination. These voyages include all the
elements expected in accounts of exploration: danger in the face of
extreme climatic conditions, scientific investigations, and encounters
between different cultures.
The explosion of scientific and cultural issues which flowed from
Cook's 1768 voyage and subsequent expeditions is thoroughly covered here
in studies by experts from around the world. |
